Some Thoughts Regarding Prayer...

As we continue to emphasis the importance of prayer at Cook, it is crucial that we evaluate our motivations for prayer in light of the Scripture. Awhile back I was reading through My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers and was moved by some of his thoughts regarding the purpose of prayer.

"Prayer is not a normal part of the life of the natural man. We hear it said that a person's life will suffer if he doesn't pray, but I question that. What will suffer is the life of the Son of God in him, which is nourished not by food, but by prayer. When a person is born again from above, the life of the Son of God is born in him, and he can either starve or nourish that life. Prayer is the way that the life of God in us is nourished. Our common ideas regarding prayer are not found in the New Testament. We look upon prayer simply as a means of getting things for ourselves, but the biblical purpose of prayer is that we may get to know God Himself." (Taken from My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers, August 28 devotional)

May the Lord help us to always remember that prayer is more a relationship with Him than an activity we perform to please Him.

By the way, it's still not too late to be a part of one of our CLI classes on prayer. A ladies class, "He Speaks to Me," meets on Thursdays at 10:00am and Sundays at 4:30pm. A coed class, "Pray in Faith" meets on Sundays at 4:30pm.

Freely Given - March 2015

During the month of March we will offer two new CLI classes related to the subject of prayer.

"He Speaks to Me" by Priscilla Shirer is a women's study focusing on how God speaks to His people individually and the importance of a heart of obedience in hearing the voice of God. It will be offered on Thursday mornings and Sunday afternoons. The Thursday class will begin March 12 with the Sunday class kicking off on March 22.

"Pray in Faith" authored by T. W. Hunt and Claude King examines how we learn to hear from God and how we join God in His work in this world through prayer. This class will be offered on Sunday afternoons beginning March 22. It is open to both men and women.
