A Word from Shaffka - May 2014

Parents, if you have a student that is graduating from high school this year, I am excited to let you know that we will be honoring our graduates on Sunday, May 18 at 6:00 PM, in our Graduate Recognition Service. We will need your graduate to turn in 5 photos covering from birth to graduate portrait and a questionnaire that will need to be completed by Sunday, May 4. By the request of our graduates, they will be using their questionnaire pre-recording interview that will be shown in the service. Church family, you will also have the opportunity to express your congratulations and gifts to graduates, immediately following the service in the gym for a reception. Each graduate will have a table setup in their honor, so you may place gifts and cards to express congratulations.

This year, we have graduates that are graduating with Homeschool, Choudrant, and Ruston High School. Homeschool graduation will be held at Cook Baptist Church on Saturday, May 17 at 2:00 PM. Choudrant graduation will be held at Howard Auditorium on Monday, May 19 at 7:00 PM. Ruston High graduation will be held at Thomas Assembly Center on Tuesday, May 20 at 7:00 PM.

On Thursday, May 22, our student ministry will be welcoming in our upcoming 7th Graders and their parents at 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM in the Ministry Building. Parents, we will have Q&A time and we will be providing details of upcoming events and activities that will be available for your student to get involved for the summer and upcoming school year. We will have food and games and recreation for your students lead by our Youth Leadership Team.

This year, our End of School Party will be held at Brandon Milton's camp on Lake Claiborne on Saturday, May 24, between 10:00 AM through 4:00 PM. Guys will need to bring a bag of chips and girls will need to bring some type of dessert or treats. We will have maps printed to show you how to get to Brandon's camp that we will send through email and can be picked up the church office as we get closer to date of the event.

Parents, if you are interested in helping with the planning and carrying out the plans with our student ministry, then I would like to invite you to our Youth Leadership Team/Youth Support Meetings. We usually have our meeting on the first Wednesday night of every month at 7:15 PM in the Youth 3 room upstairs in the Upper Room of the Ministry Building. If you are interested in being apart of the Youth Support Team, then caught me sometime at church or give me a call at the church office. I would love to visit with you on how you can be involved.

In His Grip,

Bro. Shawn

Parents, in the month of June on Wednesday nights for REFUGE, we will be meeting between 6:00-8:00 PM for a special event, "Impacting Your World". We have invited special guests to come in to speak to Our students about different religions that our students encounter right here in Ruston. Here is the schedule and religions that we will cover:

May 28 - Mormonism & Jehovah's Witness

June 4 - New Age Movement

June 11 - Atheism

June 18 - Islam

June 25 - Wicca & Witchcraft

Parents, I would like to invite you to come and be a part of the evenings with us. Our guest speakers will be sharing some of the basic beliefs of each of these religions, but they will expose the lies of this religion by sharing the truth of God's Word. Our students will have opportunity to do some Q and A time with the speaker and experience some food that will relate to certain cultures or countries that these religions are know for. We hope you will encourage your students to be a part of this special event and you will make plans to join us.

A Word From Shaffka - July 2014

We have had an amazing time of learning and equipping our teenagers with Impacting-Your World on Wednesday night at REFUGE through the month of June. I want to thank all the parents and youth workers that have helped to make the evenings go so smoothly. I especially want to thank Ashley Maxwell, Denise Matthews, and Shannon Meyers in helping to prepare food to allow our students to experience a little taste of different cultures. Special thank you to our speakers for Impacting Your World:

May 28 - Mormonism & Jehovah's Witness - Bro. Mike Holloway
June 4 - Hinduism - Ashton Sistrunk, Ashley's friend that served in Hindu country
June 11 - Atheism - Harold Henderson
June 18 - Islam - Steve & Anna Gilbert
June 25 - Wicca & Witchcraft - Scott Sullivan. Equipping Pastor at FBC Haughton, LA.

Church family, I would like to ask you to be in prayer for our students as they will encounter people in Ruston that believe in these religions.

I also want to ask you be in prayer for our students this summer as we go to M-fuge this month. In one of the mission tracks, they will have the opportunity to minister to people of different religions. Parents of students that are attending M-fuge, please make sure you get the remaining balance for camp turned in as soon as possible at the first of the month of July. Please make sure you also get all medical release forms turned in no later than Wednesday, July 11. We will be loading luggage on Sunday morning right after our morning worship service. We will be meeting at the church on Monday morning, July 14, at 4:30-AM to load up and head out for Belmont University in Nashville, TN. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at the church office or on my cell.

Moms, you should have received an updated calendar of the Breakfast Club and SNAC schedule. If you did not receive one, please let me know and I will email you the schedule. I want to thank y'all again for helping out with bringing breakfast and snacks. I believe these are a great opportunity for our teenagers to connect with each other and encourage each other in their walk with Christ. We are very grateful for your kindness and your willingness to serve our students.

A Word From Shaffka - September 2014

Hello Parents,

This month in our Connect Groups on Sunday mornings our students will be studying God's Word through the theme of Bridging the Gap---A Look at Isaiah. This unit provides a clear picture of God's justice and grace to His chosen people. God's people were sinful and rebellious, but His grace continued to seek them for His purposes and to turn them to Himself—ultimately through His Suffering Servant. I will continue to weekly send family devotions that will lead up to the study on Sunday mornings. I hope you find these helpful for you and your student to be able to connect and to discuss what they are learning on Sunday mornings in Connect Groups.

During the week of September 14-17, we are excited to have Steve Hale with us in revival. The evening services will be at 6:00 p.m. each night. We have two youth events planned to encourage our students to invite friends that they have been praying for and hope to see their friends come to faith in Christ. On Sunday evening after the service, we will have a S.N.A.C. in the gym and fellowship hall with ice cream sundaes and banana splits. Next, on Wednesday evening at 5:00 p.m., we will have a Pizza Party in the Youth Room and Bro. Steve will be sharing God's Word on specific issues that teenagers are dealing with in today's culture. Please be in prayer as we are trying to schedule school assemblies with our area Junior High and High Schools for Bro. Steve to share his power presentation of "Be A Winner" with students.

I want to tell you church family about our upcoming event, "Faith & Family Day" on September 20th at 6:00 p.m. as the Bulldogs take on Northwestern State. Tickets are going to be only $12 on the west side of the stadium. Additionally, local Christian rap artist and DJ, Big Al is going to emcee the event that will take place in the Thomas Assembly Center. The event will play host to Louisiana Tech University student-athletes and coaches discussing with attendees their relationship with Christ and the role the Faith plays in their life and careers. If students or families are interested in going as a church group and we bring a group of 20 or more they will place our group name on Dogzilla video board during the game! If you would like to go and purchase tickets at this price for the game, then please let me know and give me your money by Sunday, September 14.

Parents, if there is anything or anyway that I can be an encouragement to you and your family, please feel free to contact me at anytime. I pray that our Heavenly Father will bless you daily with His presence and wisdom as you raise and disciple your students to walk with the Lord. May God's richest blessings be upon you and your family!

Bro. Shawn

A Word From Shaffka - November 2014

Hello Parents,

The first part of the month in our Connect Groups on Sunday mornings, our students will be studying God's Word through the theme of The Means: The Grace of God. This unit goes deeper into God's grace and dives into the ultimate expression of His grace through the sacrifice of Christ. Because of this grace, His people are able to live for His purposes, representing His grace to the world. The second part of the month, we will be studying God's Word through the theme of Together: How We Relate to Others. God not only created people for a relationship with Himself, He created them to relate with other people. He did not create people for isolation. This unit explores how our relationship with God prepares us for and is reflected in our relationships with others. I will continue to weekly send family devotions that will lead up to the study on Sunday mornings. I hope you find these helpful for you and your student to be able to connect and to discuss what they are learning on Sunday mornings in Connect Groups.

If you were not able to attend the parent and student meeting in the month of October and hear details about the Winter Retreat, then here is some information about the trip. Winter Retreat will be Wednesday, December 31 through Saturday, January 3 at Shepherd of the Ozarks near Harriet, AR. The cost of the trip will be $150. The cost will include lodging for three nights, meals during the retreat, and a student book of the Bible studies. A $50 non-refundable deposit is due by Sunday, December 7 in order to guarantee your spot for the retreat. We will be staying in Big Creek Lodge. The remaining balance will be due Sunday, December 28. On-site activities you have the opportunity to participate in are: fishing (bring your own gear and light tackle [barbless hooks preferred please]), hiking, covered basketball court, sand pit volleyball, gaga dodgeball, 9-hole disc golf course, horseshoes, and recreation fields. The activities that have additional cost and must have 10 or more participants are: wilderness paintball, which is $20, high ropes challenge course, which is $20, horseback riding, which is $15, and cliffhanger (swing), which is $10. The cost of these activities is not included in the $150. These activities are optional and the cost is extra. There are two meals that are not included in the $150. We will be stopping for lunch on the way there and on the way home. Parents, if you are interested in going on the Winter Retreat, please get with me as soon as possible so I may know that you would like to go and I may discuss the cost for you to go. There are medical release forms that need to be completed in order for you to go and participate in the activities.

Bro. Shawn
